9 Things You Need To Know About Teens, Technology & Online Privacy
Lenhart, A. November 7, 2013, 9 Things You Need To Know About Teens, Technology & Online Privacy. Family Online Safety Institute. Presentation retrieved online

This presentation was very informative as to how teenagers are interacting online through the use of social networking. The article discussed 9 important things to know about teens, technology and online privacy. In general, the information stated that most teenage Internet users today are becoming more and more mobile users which means they are accessing the Internet via mobile devices like tablets or cell phones. Another key note is that teenagers are becoming primary users of social network sites compared to adults. Perhaps the most alarming information presented in this presentation is that teens are sharing more personal information about themselves and don't seem to be concerned that their information might be accessed by third parties such as advertisers and businesses. Parents on the other hand, share a deeper concern for their children's privacy, reputation and online interaction with people they do not know. The article however, does yield some comforting news and states that many teens are seeking out advice from friends and peers about managing their privacy online.
I feel that teenagers need to be continually educated on information ethics especially through the use of social media networks. I have met such young teens that really have no idea how the information they are posting online is available for others to see and use without proper restrictions in place. I personally am glad I did not meet the Internet as a teenager. It certainly saved me from many mistakes. :) The sad truth is that many of us who are new to technology, are not properly educated on information ethics ourselves. So as librarians, it is important to do educate our students on safe use of the Internet to help them make better choices and protect their own privacy and reputation as they interact with others online.
I created an Infographic for the information presented on this presentation. If you would like to view it, here is the web address:
