The following is a collection of YouTube videos that are being used in school libraries to promote the library program. They are in the order that I viewed them on YouTube.
More information you will find includes my experience in creating a book trailer, as well as a QR code to access the trailer. Further more, you will find information on how to use QR codes in your school environment.
YouTube Videos
Channel 1:
Video 1 provides a great tutorial for students on how to access the Social Issues resources in the library website. It goes into very detailed steps which allow the viewer to keep up with out getting lost. The video goes straight to the point and is not too long.
Video 2 is a fun video which students will enjoy because it uses fun graphics to show the different types of books the library has to offer.
Channel 2:
Video 1 is a tutorial for Power Point and shares the basic steps in creating a presentation. I think it is important to be able to provide these types of tutorial in your library website because it makes the library much more helpful. Rather than having to search for tutorials online, students can find what they need in their own library.
Video 2 is a student developed research project. There were various student projects on this channel, but I found this particular topic interesting. It was about traumatic brain injuries and specifically the effects it has on soldiers. Very informative.
Channel 3:
Video 1 is basically an orientation video for students that covers course information about their high school years. It goes into detail as to what is expected of them, how to choose courses and what they could expect as far as rigorous courses.
Video 2 is such a funny video that emphasizes the importance of keeping a well organized binder to keep track of all course materials. This is definitely a video that students will enjoy because it use the idea presented in an MTV show called Pimp My Ride, where a person gets selected to have their junky car remodeled. I believe videos like this are a great way to send the message across to students in an engaging way.
Channel 4:
Video 1 is basically showing students how to access the library resources online. It is a very thorough tutorial which is twenty minutes long. I'm not sure if a teenager will stick around for that long. However, it will be very helpful to them if they do.
Video 2 is absolutely awesome. I enjoyed how the new words to this soundtrack were so catchy and really sent the message across to students about bringing back their overdue books. This was my favorite overdue book video and that says a lot because I saw several great ones on this channel.
Overall
Which is the most helpful for students?
I believe the most helpful video among all of the ones above is Norman High School Library's video on Social Issues Resources. This video is informative and easy to follow. It is also a good length of about thirteen minutes long. I think that to attract student viewers to actually use the resources that are being put out for them through videos, they should be focused on the topic and keep them engaged. This video does that for students. Other videos I think are equally as helpful and important are videos like tutorials, orientations and book reviews.
Which is the video that students will like the best?
I believe the most popular video which students will definitely like the best is Pikesville High School Library's video called Pimp My Binder. This video involved the students in its creation and sent a fun and engaging message about the importance of staying organized. Fun videos, such as this one, that involve them will definitely attract students to watch and share the videos.
How will I use videos to promote my library?
I have definitely learned a lot of ideas on how videos can be use in the library. Just the idea of communicating with students about turning in books and what the library has to offer is a good reason to use videos. These could be played through the school's linked television system to remind or inform students who don't make the time to go to the library every day. I plan to use videos to engage my students and gain their support of the library program by having them be involved in creating them. I mentioned earlier that students love seeing pictures of themselves and especially having others see them is almost like their famous now. I want to take advantage of that and get them to do the fun work.
Book Trailer Assignment
Creating a book trailer for the first time was incredible. I had such a great time working on it. I felt an accomplishment after I was done. The book trailer was based on the book Too Many Tamales by Gary Soto. I chose this book because my little three year old absolutely loves it and won't get tired of having me read it to her. I enjoyed getting familiar with Animoto's features and I see the potential this video creation service has especially in the classroom. Students can definitely use this to present information on a project or other assignment. I think its important to use this type of technology to change the basic paper and pencil projects and get them using more technology in school. We have no choice as educators, but to teach in the manner that our students have been learning since they were born; videos, graphics, audio, computers and many more.
Maria was feeling very grown-up on Christmas Eve as she helped her mother prepare the tamales for Christmas dinner. When she slipped her mother's diamond ring onto her finger, she only meant to wear it for a minute. But suddenly, the ring was gone, and there were 24 tamales that just might contain the missing ring.
If you would like to watch the book trailer, scan the following QR code and enjoy.
I have been to workshops where the presenters used QR codes to have us do a vocabulary & definition scavenger hunt. We had to scan the code with our cell phones in order to get the definition to a vocabulary word and we had to fill a blank sheet with our answers. It was fun and caused us to move around during a long day of listening to lectures.
Another way to use these codes is to add the QR code to Word documents for students to check their work. Also using these codes linked to URLs that you want students to visit such as events that are happening in the library, school or community.
Math teachers can use codes to have students access an online graphing tools to help them with their work or have them create a data chart. Art and science teachers can use them to give access to art and picture galleries.
How I Plan to Use QR Codes:
I plan to use QR codes to simply get students to access information through a different medium. I plan to have these codes in different places around the school and all of them linked to important or random announcements. They could even be used to create a scavenger hunt contest for the library. I think it is important to get the teachers, administrators and staff in on the idea so they too can enjoy the concept. As well as understand why students might have their cell phones out in the hall way. :) I plan to use QR codes that will lead students to a book trailer just like we are doing for this assignment. There are so many ways to use these codes it would be terrible if my library could not expose students to as many as possible.
